Dealing with Grief at Christmas
Christmas is a season of joy. Yet within this season many experience deep sadness. This year, especially, many will suffer loneliness and isolation. Several parishes are planning a Blue Christmas or Longest Night service to provide a safe space to name and share our grief, making room for hope. You are welcome to join. The first is offered Wednesday December 16. St. John the Divine, Onoway will host a Blue Christmas service via YouTube at 7:00pm. Bishop Jane will share her thoughts at a service hosted by diocesan Rural Ministries on December 21. Please click below for more virtual events, plus Messy Church material related to grief, and even a link to a BBC documentary on grief featuring Archbishop Justin Welby. Krismas de PamilyaStarts tonight! The Filipino Congregation of St. Matthias will be taking a break this year from Misa de Gallo. This is sad for it is a tradition borrowed from the home country of the Philippines, with a few adjustments. It normally includes a "Rooster Service" which is a daily early morning mass counting down the nine days before Christmas. Here in Edmonton, we changed the 4:00am start time and gathered in the evening in people's homes instead. We celebrated the Eucharist, sang carols, and had a massive meal. Due to COVID-19, we cannot continue with this tradition in the same way for this year; we are taking a break. Instead, we will participate in "Krismas de Pamilya" (Christmas with the Family). Pandemic Craft Project
Please join us in a shared project to create a decorative textile for the Cathedral narthex. We will be gathering white knit, crocheted, and woven squares at the Cathedral between December 1st and January 15th. The squares will be joined together into a shared piece that shows that even when we are apart, we can do great things together through Christ! Click below for full information, or download this instructions pdf. I hope you will consider contributing a square as a concrete act of solidarity with each other and an expression of hope that we will get to the other side of the pandemic and gather together as a diocese once more.
