BISHOP'S CORNER

JusticeIt's the Gospel Thing to Do - Series Starts March 1 Walk through Lent with Bishop Steve as he explores the call to justice at the core of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Is 'doing justice' part of the Gospel or an extra? This is one of the central questions that the Christian church has been wrestling with over the last century as we have lived through and meditated on the experiences of WWI, WWII, the holocaust, the civil rights movement, women's equality, the Cold War, Apartheid, the Residential School legacy, LGBTQ+ inclusion, the Great Depression, the climate crisis and many more. Does the Gospel of Jesus Christ have anything life-giving to say to the great challenges of our time? The answer is a resounding yes. Every Wednesday in March, from 7:00-8:30 pm Zoom Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86437570642 |

Clergy Conference 2023Respecting the Dignity of Every Human Being: Equipping Clergy to Build Anti-Racist Communities From Tuesday, February 7 to Thursday, February 9, nearly 50 clergy from the Diocese of Edmonton gathered at Providence Renewal Centre for the clergy conference, which had been held annually until the COVID-19 pandemic came along. In fact, the last such gathering of clergy happened more than three years ago, in January 2020. The title of the conference was Respecting the Dignity of Every Human Being: Equipping Clergy to Help Build Anti-Racist Communities. Bishop Stephen London points out that “the phrase 'respecting the dignity of every human being' comes from our baptismal covenant. The idea of the conference was to help our diocese live more fully into our baptismal promises through the work of anti-racism.” For more infomation visit:

Immanuel ACW Helping Community Take Action Against Domestic Violence
If you suspect someone you know is in a violent relationship, asking if they are okay and if they feel safe at home can help save their life. At the “Stepping. Outside. The. Shadow.” workshop organised by the Immanuel, Wetaskiwin ACW last Saturday, church and community members from Wetaskiwin, Maskwacis, Camrose, Ponoka, Edmonton and surrounding areas heard that we all have a responsibility to act against domestic violence. Because victims of domestic violence are often isolated from their friends and family support network (the COVID pandemic exacerbated victims being isolated from in-person interactions outside the home), their workplace peers and/or church community are their line to safety. St. Mary's Gospel Singalong Welcomes Ukrainian Guest Pianist
St. Mary the Virgin, Vegreville hosted another successful Gospel Singalong event on Sunday, February 12. The parish music team Companions on a Journey (Jim Bragg, Lisa Topilko, Janet Rowlands) led the musical event, a fundraiser for the church. The afternoon was further supported by various church members who assisted with providing or serving hot and cold refreshments including home-baked cookies and welcoming people at the door. Special guest Khrystyna Kohut from Ukraine shared her musical talent, making a truly memorable afternoon. Kohut was a professional piano teacher in Ukraine before the Russian invasion, and she fled the war in her homeland just four months ago. And while she speaks almost no English, she broke down the communication barrier with her beautiful accompaniments for parishioner Lisa Topilko who played the flute. She then played three lovely solo piano pieces. For more infomation visit: http://edmonton.anglican.ca/news/st-marys-gospel-singalong-welcomes-ukrainian-guest-pianist
