Cursillo Welcome Back BBQ
What is better than a welcome back BBQ? A welcome back BBQ with ice cream! The Cursillo community kicked off our fall season with hamburgers and all the fix’ns followed by ice cream for dessert. We met at St. Timothy’s in Edmonton on Saturday, September 27, for good food, fellowship, praise, and prayer. With the 2025 weekend coming soon, the Welcome Back Ultreya was designed to encourage community members to approach someone to attend. What better way to be inspired about the weekend than to hear Bishop Stephen talk about his Cursillo experience in 2018? Bishop Stephen talked about how his Cursillo weekend gave him 4 L’s: love, learn, listen, and laughter. He spoke about how the entire weekend was enveloped in love; love was palpable in the space and in every word. He found it to be a great opportunity to learn through the talks and fellowship. He felt listened to; the participants and team members really were there to listen to each person. And there was so much laughter, spreading joy throughout the space. --- Click the button below to read more! --- The upcoming weekend is Friday, November 7 (early afternoon) until Sunday, November 9 (later afternoon) at Star of the North Retreat Center, St. Albert - Janie Seguin For more infomation visit:

What We Carry film screeningSaturday, October 18 at St. Augustine of Canterbury What We Carry was commissioned for CBC’s Documentary Channel and delves into the interwoven stories of a grandmother who once taught at a residential school and the community she impacted. In 1963, a restless Jennifer Notley spots an ad in a teacher’s magazine for a position in Northern Alberta. She leaves her life in England and arrives by bush plane to Wabasca-Desmarais—an isolated place with bad roads, no electricity, limited services, and a residential school. Jennifer taught for five years at Desmarais Indian Residential School as it transitioned from a residential school to a day school. In 2022, her daughter Katrinka and granddaughter Bracken return to this beautiful northern lakeside community in the heart of Treaty 8 territory (one of the largest Treaty Nations in Canada) with questions, carrying a trunk full of history. Kat McDermott and Willow Auger, both members of the Bigstone Cree nation, introduce Bracken and Katrinka to the community. Together, they open the trunk and open the doors to discovery. This film contains discussions of abuse and trauma sustained by residential school survivors. Join us for a Q&A following this screening with producer and subject Kat McDermott and writer & subject Katrinka Scott! Runtime: 88 minutes Tickets by donation at the door. Refreshments available for purchase. Proceeds will go to the Pakitinâsowin Fund. |

Learning Day: May This Church be Like a Treefaithful stewardship of church properties - Saturday, October 25, 2025 “May This Church Be Like a Tree,” You might recognize those words from the hymn of the same title by Pablo D Sosa. Every tree knows the rhythm of the seasons, and our churches are living through these seasons too. It’s new territory for us as we hold the gifts of buildings from our predecessors and step forward to learn – how bricks and mortar, wood and nails may creatively continue to serve God’s mission. Our learning partner at this event will be Katja Brittain, who has worked with many congregations to shape faithful discernment. She will guide us in all kinds of new understandings of how we see our church properties. Church Admin Corner: Time to Review Your Administration
With a new liturgical year around the corner, it is a great time to review the administrative processes of your parish and make sure you have not missed any key administrative functions. The Diocese of Edmonton has created a Parish Administration resource for use by clergy and parish administrators (or anyone doing administrative work in your parish). To access this resource, please visit https://edmonton.anglican.ca/parish-info/pages/parish-administration. The Word version (as opposed to the PDF) has some embedded resources, such as a rental contract template, that might be useful. Both the PDF and Word versions contain useful links and information. |

Spread the Word - Support Each Other and Our Ministrywe are happy to help spread the word Part of what unites us as a family of churches is the support we give one another and our ministries. We can do this by sharing our news and events (e.g., youth gatherings, parish fundraisers, worship services, community outreach, public lectures) here in the Synod Scene, the diocese's weekly e-newsletter. We have created a form to simplify this task. Click on the button below to upload a graphic or picture (horizontal / landscape orientation; 1500x784 px), and your brief news/event information. Submissions must be received by Tuesday at noon for inclusion in the current week's newsletter. Have questions?
